Home Automation — Algarve
A house is automated well when nobody in it has to think about the automation. Lights are at the right level without being adjusted. The blinds have already moved. A guest walks into a room and finds a switch where a switch should be. The system that made all of that happen is not mentioned, because it was never noticed.
That is a much harder result than a house full of impressive features, and it is decided almost entirely before anyone sees a screen.
KNX or Control4 — and why it is not a matter of taste
We install both, and the choice follows from what the property needs rather than from what we prefer to sell.
KNX is an open international standard, not a manufacturer’s product line. Devices from hundreds of manufacturers interoperate, the programming lives in a project file, and — the part that matters most in ten years’ time — the installation does not depend on any single company continuing to exist. Any certified KNX partner, anywhere, can maintain or extend it. It is the natural choice for lighting, blinds, climate and the infrastructure of a large house, and for owners whose horizon is long.
Control4 is a proprietary platform with a considerably more polished user experience and much easier integration of audio, video and streaming services. Where the centre of gravity of a house is entertainment, it is frequently the right answer.
In many properties the honest answer is both: KNX carrying the infrastructure, Control4 carrying the experience, with a documented interface between them. That is the combination we install most often, and it is also the combination for which our work has been recognised — internationally by Control4 with European Best Lighting Project, and nationally with the Prémio Projeto KNX 2020.
What we would avoid, in either direction, is a system assembled from consumer devices that each depend on a different cloud service. They work beautifully for a year. They fail one at a time, silently, when a manufacturer changes an API or discontinues a product, and by then they are embedded in the walls.
The house has to work for people who have no app
This is the single most useful test of an automation design, and the one most often failed.
A guest, a cleaner, an elderly parent and a child all need to walk into a room and turn on a light. That means physical keypads, engraved with what they actually do, positioned where a hand reaches for a switch — with the app as a convenience layered on top, never as the only way in.
A house that can only be operated by the person who commissioned it, from their phone, is not automated. It is dependent.
What is worth automating, and what is not
Automation earns its place where it removes a decision that a person would otherwise have to make repeatedly, or where it does something a person cannot.
- Shading against the sun. In the Algarve this is thermal engineering rather than convenience — external shading stops solar gain before it crosses the glass, and a system that follows the real sun position and the interior temperature saves more than any air conditioning setting. - Lighting scenes. Four layers of light changing together is an atmosphere; one circuit dimming is a dimmer.
- Climate by zone and by presence, rather than one thermostat deciding for a whole floor.
- Energy. Deferring pool filtration and water heating to the solar peak, and yielding the car charger instead of tripping the main breaker. See energy management.
- Absence. A property empty for months should be watching itself: temperature, humidity, leaks, the alarm, the network. See maintenance and support.
And what is not worth it: anything that makes an ordinary action slower than the manual version, and anything whose failure mode leaves someone in the dark.
Scenes and schedules that survive contact with a family
Most automation disappointment traces back to scenes designed for a demonstration rather than for a household. A scene called Movie that also closes the blinds is delightful in November and infuriating at seven in the evening in July.
The scenes that last are the dull ones — Morning, Evening, Leaving, Night, Guest — and they last because they were adjusted after a few weeks of the family actually living with them. We budget for that adjustment visit, because the first configuration is a hypothesis.
The infrastructure decides the ceiling
Everything above depends on decisions taken during construction, and this is where automation projects are quietly won or lost.
How many lighting circuits, and grouped how. Whether there is a control pair to each fitting. Where the rack lives and whether it is ventilated. Whether there is conduit with a draw wire to the places nobody has thought of yet. Whether the network was engineered or improvised. Whether there is a spare way for the charger, the battery and the gate that do not exist yet.
None of it is expensive during first fix. All of it is expensive, or impossible, afterwards. It is the reason we prefer to be involved alongside the electrical design rather than after it.
Retrofit, and being honest about it
An occupied house without conduit is a different problem, and it has real answers — wireless KNX and hybrid topologies, control at the distribution board rather than at each point, and retrofit shading and climate control that need no new cabling.
What retrofit rarely delivers is the lighting design, because that depends on circuits that already exist. We would rather say that at the start than let it be discovered at the end.
The system belongs to you
The programming of a KNX installation lives in a project file. That file, the as-built documentation, the addressing scheme, the rack layout and the credentials belong to the owner of the property, and we hand them over.
A house whose configuration exists only on one company’s laptop cannot be serviced by anyone else, cannot be extended by anyone else, and loses value quietly at the point of sale. We say this knowing it is against our short-term commercial interest. It is in the client’s interest, and over twenty years it has proved to be in ours.
How a project runs
- Brief. How the house will be used, by whom, and for how much of the year.
- Design. Platform, topology, circuits, keypad positions, scene structure, and the infrastructure that follows.
- Coordination with the build. On the same drawings as the electrical installation, while changing your mind is still cheap.
- Installation and programming. By our own technicians.
- Commissioning and handover. Explained to everyone who will use it, not only to whoever signed for it.
- Adjustment and support. Because the first configuration is a hypothesis.
See it working
Our showroom in Quinta do Lago has a full installation running — cinema, lighting, audio and control. Twenty minutes in a finished room settles questions that specifications cannot.
