Lighting and Shading — Algarve

Light and the control of daylight are the two things that decide how a house feels, and they are the two most often left to the last weeks of a build, when the decisions that mattered have already been taken by someone else.

This is the work for which iHome has been recognised twice: a Control4 European Best Lighting Project award, judged internationally, and the national Prémio Projeto KNX. Both were given for lighting and control design, which is why this page is more specific than most.

Four layers, not one circuit

A room lit by a single evenly-spaced grid of downlights is lit the way an office is lit. Domestic light works in layers, and each has a different job:

  • Ambient — the general level. Often best delivered indirectly, off a ceiling or a cove, where it produces no glare and no shadow on faces.
  • Task — worktop, desk, reading, mirror. Positioned so the user does not stand in their own light, which is the failure of almost every kitchen lit only from the middle of the ceiling.
  • Accent — art, stone, planting, a wall texture. Roughly three times the surrounding level is where something reads as deliberately lit rather than merely visible.
  • Decorative — the fittings you see. They are objects; they are rarely a serious source of light and should not be asked to be.

Separating them is what makes a single room usable for breakfast, for working and for a dinner that ends late. It is also what makes scenes meaningful: a scene that changes four layers is an atmosphere, while a scene that dims one circuit is just a dimmer.

The specification that separates good LED from bad

Fittings that look identical on a supplier’s page behave very differently once installed, and the differences are measurable:

  • Colour rendering. CRI of 90 or above is the baseline for a home, and the figure worth asking about separately is R9 — the deep red component, omitted from the headline average, that determines whether food, timber, terracotta and skin look right or slightly dead.
  • Colour consistency. Two fittings of the same nominal 2700 K can be visibly different from each other. The specification that controls it is the MacAdam ellipse, and 3-step or tighter is what keeps a row of downlights from looking like a row of slightly different downlights. It is the single most common visible defect in otherwise expensive installations.
  • Dimming behaviour. Most disappointment with LED lighting is a driver problem, not a lamp problem. Cheap drivers step visibly instead of gliding, flicker at low output, and cut off entirely somewhere around 10% — exactly the range a house is dimmed to in the evening. Good drivers go smoothly to 1% or below and hold there.
  • Flicker. Invisible modulation at low dim levels shows up as banding on every phone video taken in the room, and is associated with headaches and eye strain over long exposure. It is worth specifying against, particularly in kitchens and workspaces.
  • Glare. A source recessed deep into its housing, or behind a honeycomb louvre, disappears; a flush source stares back. The difference costs little and is the reason some ceilings read as calm and others as a constellation.

How the light is controlled

The control method is a structural decision, not an accessory.

Phase dimming — the traditional approach, switching the mains waveform — remains adequate for small installations, provided the dimmer and driver types are matched. Mismatch produces buzzing, flicker and premature failure, and the combinations are not always documented.

DALI addresses each fitting individually over a control pair. Groups, scenes and behaviour are then configuration rather than wiring, and a fitting reports its own status — which means a failed lamp can be identified from a list instead of by walking the house. In a property of any size, being able to regroup lighting later without rewiring is worth the modest extra cost at first fix.

KNX is the wider system that lighting sits inside: an open standard, wired, vendor-independent, with the programming held in a project file that belongs to the owner. That last point matters more than any feature — it is what stops a house from being locked to whoever installed it.

Whatever the topology, one principle holds: the house must work for someone who has no app. A guest, a cleaner, an elderly parent and a child all need to walk into a room and turn on the light. That means physical keypads, engraved with what they do, in the positions where a hand reaches for a switch — with the app as a convenience on top, never as the only way in.

Colour temperature through the day

Fixed warm white at 2700 K is the safe default for a home and the right answer in most rooms. Where it is worth going further is in spaces used across the whole day — kitchens, family rooms, home offices — where tunable white lighting can be cooler and brighter in the morning and warm and low in the evening.

There is a second, subtler behaviour worth asking for: dim-to-warm, where the light also grows warmer as it is dimmed, the way a halogen lamp did. Its absence is the reason a well-dimmed LED room can still feel oddly clinical, and its presence is something people notice without being able to name.

Shading: in the Algarve, this is thermal engineering

Shading is usually sold as privacy and blackout. In this climate its main job is heat, and the distinction that governs everything is where the shade sits relative to the glass.

Solar energy stopped outside the window never becomes heat in the room. Solar energy stopped by an internal blind has already passed through the glass and is now warming the room from the inside — the blind absorbs it and re-radiates most of it inward. External shading is therefore dramatically more effective at controlling heat gain than any internal fabric, and no amount of cooling capacity substitutes for it.

This is the single most consequential decision on a south or west façade here, and it has to be made before the openings are built, because external screens, blinds and shutters need a recess or a box to disappear into. Retrofitted, they end up visible; designed in, they vanish.

Internal shading then does what it is genuinely good at: privacy, glare control at eye level, blackout in bedrooms, and light-filtering fabrics that keep the view. Fabric openness factor — roughly 1 to 5% for screen fabrics — trades glare control against how much of the landscape survives, and it is worth seeing samples in the actual room rather than choosing from a card.

Automating shading properly

Shading that moves on a fixed timer is quickly disabled by the people living with it. Shading that responds to the sun is not.

The logic that works is per-façade and astronomical: the system knows the sun’s position for the date and time and treats east, south and west glazing differently through the day, closing ahead of direct gain and reopening once the façade is in shade. Combined with an outdoor temperature reading and knowledge of whether the house is occupied, it can pre-empt heat rather than react to it — the difference between a house that stays cool and a house that spends the afternoon cooling down.

Two aspects are not optional. Wind protection for anything external: awnings and external screens must retract automatically above a wind threshold, and that safety function should sit in the shading system itself rather than depending on a home automation server being awake. And manual override that stays overridden — if someone opens a blind to sit in the sun, the system must not close it again ten minutes later. A system that argues with its occupants is switched off within a month.

On motors, the choice between wired and radio deserves more thought than it usually gets. A motor is built into the fabric of the house for twenty years; wired control has no batteries, no pairing to lose and no radio environment to degrade, and at the scale of a whole property that reliability compounds.

Where lighting and shading meet everything else

Together they are the largest single lever over comfort and over consumption. Closing west glazing before the afternoon sun reduces cooling demand rather than fighting it; lighting scheduled and dimmed rather than left on affects the base load of the house; and both interact directly with energy management and solar generation, where shifting demand towards the hours of generation is worth real money.

They also join the rest of the house. An evening scene that dims the lighting, closes the shading and starts the cinema is one keypad press. Leaving the property sets back the lighting, closes the external shading and arms the alarm. These are the moments where integration stops being a specification and becomes something the household actually uses.

How a project runs

  1. Brief and survey. How each space is used and at what hours; orientation, glazing and existing solar exposure.
  2. Lighting design. Layer by layer, on the reflected ceiling plan: positions, beam angles, colour temperature, and the circuits and scenes behind them. Coordinated with the architect and interior designer rather than added after them.
  3. Shading strategy. External versus internal per façade, fabric and motor selection, and the builder’s work required — recesses, boxes, power and control routes.
  4. First fix. Cabling and provisions, before plaster.
  5. Programming and commissioning. Scenes built and tuned at night, in the finished room, with the client present. This is the step most often skipped and the one that decides whether the installation is loved or merely accepted.
  6. Handover. Engraved keypads, documentation, and the KNX project file delivered to the owner. Followed by a revisit after real use, because the scenes people ask for at handover are not the ones they need in month three.
